Rudy’s Story…

Rudy was mesmerized by the trumpet the first time his parents took him to a trumpet recital as a youngster. He was loved the way the performer could play so many different styles, making the trumpet sound powerful, then angry, then sweet… He decided right then that he wanted to learn to play the trumpet. His parents bought him a good trumpet and a method book. He followed the instructions in the trumpet book and was soon was able to play some different notes.

He had so much fun learning simple trumpet songs!

It wasn’t pretty, but he was a beginner and liked learning. His parents, of course, enjoyed his songs and looked forward to his improvement. Rudy joined the beginning band at his school. He already knew how to play some different notes so he had a head start over the other students. However, after some time, Rudy realized that some of the other trumpet students had a better sound quality than he did. Still, he was pleased with his ability to play mostly the right notes. More time went by and Rudy began to notice that not only was his sound weak, but that he couldn’t play his trumpet as high as some of the other trumpet students could. Just knowing the fingerings wasn’t enough. He practiced hard, but became both discouraged and envious of the way playing came so natural to the best trumpet players in his band. Rudy’s band director noticed his frustration and offered to help. Together, they worked on improving his tone by changing the shape of Rudy’s lips when he played to produce a nicer sound and better range. This change was uncomfortable to Rudy, and didn’t produce results right away. In fact, he wasn’t even able to play the trumpet as high or as clean with the new form as he was with his original set up. Rudy played the exercises his director taught him, but he didn’t notice any improvement.

His poor technique that he developed early on had become habit, limiting his ability to improve!

Playing the trumpet became less fun and he stopped playing for his parents. Rudy eventually decided that he just wasn’t cut out to be a trumpet player, quit the band class and stopped playing altogether.
